For those traveling to Sitka in fall, there are a slew of fun festivals that can enhance your experience. From educational marine events to costume balls to cultural happenings, there’s much to mark your calendar for during the season. To help you plan your trip, here is a guide to Sitka fall festivals.

Sitka Whalefest

Hosted by the Sitka Sound Science Center, Sitka Whalefest in early November offers the chance to learn about the North Pacific marine environment. Educational cruises, a marine-focused market, Sitka-sourced food, live entertainment and a symposium where scientists and experts discuss issues, trends and innovations in the world of marine biology and research are all part of the experience. You’ll leave inspired and enlightened. This is a top Sitka experience.

Alaska Day Festival

This important annual event pays homage to Russia giving up control of Alaska and giving it to the United States of America in 1867, and the diverse cultures and complicated history this led to. The festival originated in 1954, making it an important Alaska experience. To bring the October festival to life, women are asked to dress up in 1867 attire and men are encouraged to don beards. There are a number of smaller events within the larger festival, like a parade, costume contests, local and international performances, a U.S. Army Band, a large memorial service at the Sitka National Cemetery, period dinners and more.

The Haunted Maple

Every year, the Coast Guard in Sitka transforms the MS Coast Guard Cutter Maple into a haunted ship, with scary Halloween decorations — like (fake) bloody severed limbs and crypt keepers — as well as actors jumping out and terrifying visitors when they least expect it. Admission is free, although there is a suggested donation of a dry and canned good to be donated to organizations that help hungry people in the community. Call  907-966-5470 for more information.

KCAW’S Stardust Ball

Tickets to this annual Raven Radio fundraiser in late October are $35. Lip syncing and costume contests, live music, dancing and comedy are all part of the fun. Just make sure to order your tickets early as they tend to sell out quick. Call (907) 747-5877 for more information.

Native American Heritage Festival

This annual November event celebrates Native American culture in Sitka with a parade, fashion show and cultural performances. Sitka has historically played home to the Kiksadi Tlingit Indians, and along with the event this facet of local culture can be explored at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Tribal Community House, where native tribal dancing takes place, and the Sitka Historical Society and Museum, where you can learn about Native American heritage through interesting exhibits. These are both top Sitka attractions.
